“Millenial Dopamine”

A Solo Exhibition by Tempa Studio

Foreword

The interest of duo Tempa, Putud and Rara, to the topic of identity and space makes their works lead to matters involving the millennial generation. Millennial generation is a generation born in the early 90s and grew up in the 2000s. Tempa is part of that generation. Basically almost everything we feel around has a “filter”, where the function of the “filter” itself is obscuring the real reality. Millennials grew up in an instant era and made things easier. This generation has a must to get what they want, not just because they need it or it has more value, but just because they want it.

The millennial generation is very good at showing the public that life is so much fun. Quotes like “live win die old”, “let’s get lost”, etc., are an expression of pleasure, though in reality they experience a sadness or even depression. This generation has many intersect to social media. Relation they created in social media through smartphones, such as chatting, texting, uploading photos / videos, streaming video, video calls to get like and follower is everything for this generation. These activities make them release dopamine that cause feelings of joy, happiness and become a mood booster. This social-based activity that unconsciously exerts a bad influence, such as unilateral judgment becomes sporadic in this generation simply because of the limited understanding they get on their smartphone screen. This phenomenon also makes millennials ignore simplicity in a long process, for example is the need to save money to buy land / house (fact that the price of land in Jogja is increasing). At least spending money on materials that have long-term functions should be more thoughtful than for materials with short-term functions. That give the idea for Tempa to create works / artefacts as a critique for themselves and as a symbol of the times because they are awake and seeing from a distance to the millenial stream.
