HOME – Yogyakarta: “Street Mythology”
A Solo Photography Exhibition by Shamow’el Rama Surya
Foreword
by Shamow’el Rama Surya
I moved my domicile from Jakarta to Yogyakarta in July 1998. My goal was to study at the English Literature Department at Sanata Dharma University. Even though I didn’t finish the lecture, in those two years, I even completed a photography documentation project.
At that time there was a transition from authoritarian rule to democracy. The fall of Soeharto’s power has opened the door to freedom, space of expression and voting rights. The Indonesian people were preparing to begin their first free elections, the euphoria of freedom was everywhere.
My routine was to ride a bicycle from Patangpuluhan to the campus in Gejayan. I attended various art and cultural events and documented them. Likewise, the dynamics of Yogya people’s lives, art performances, and cultural expressions of the people on the streets. In those two years, a lot of photos were captured in the negative black and white film. I put these records together in a portfolio which I later titled “Yogyakarta: Street Mythology”.
The portfolio was first exhibited in a solo photography exhibition at the Nikon Image House Gallery, Kusnact, Switzerland in 2000. Finally, this work finally got the chance to be exhibited in Indonesia. This cannot be separated from the goodwill of both Yustina Neni and Agung Kurniawan. Through their kindness, my collection of works can be exhibited at Kedai Kebun Forum, on February 28, 2020. “Yogyakarta: Street Mythology”.
