A Solo Exhibition of Drawings by Oik Wasfuk
Foreword
Catur Nur Novianto a.k.a. Oik Wasfuk (1981) is one of the prominent illustrators who has been a part of underground music scene of Yogyakarta for some time. He spends most of his days struggling with pen and papers while drowning himself in the straight-forwardness, noise and the speed of punk and metal music. Suprisingly, those integral elements of punk and metal music seem to get along really well with Oik’s perseverance and craziness for order in drawing lines, crafting shadings and dot-to-dot details. His working intensity and consistency have led to hundreds of works manifested in the album covers and merchandises of local and international underground bands. In his works Oik often begins with questions that derived from the absurdity like celebration of life and death and reaction of everyday happenings. In other words, Oik’s works are narrations caught in the middle of absurdity and practical reality. On the other’s side, Oik’s has been involved in the punk scene of Yogyakarta since the nineties. Since 1997, he had been in punk bands like Boikot, Subversiv, A Sistem Rijek ?! He also involved in D.O.M 65 and some other bands. It’s quite fair to say that these activities and their social arena are two things that really affect the characters of Oik’s works and point of views.
