Movie Screening “Why Democracy?”
Cooperation between Kedai Kebun Forum (KKF) and Goethe Institute Jakarta

Wednesday, 1 May 2013
At 7:00 pm
Venue Performance space (2nd floor) KKF
Open for public and FREE

SYNOPSIS

Why Democracy?
International short film compilation.

Director: div., 109 min., 2007, div. languages with English subtitles
Democracy comes in a vast variety of different shapes and sizes across the world. These various forms are bound by a common goal. Democracy is viewed as the form of rule best equipped to protect and guarantee basic human rights.

Steps International produced 13 short films from Africa, Asia and Europe exploring the theme of democracy for the “Why Democracy?” film project. The films were co-produced by the Goethe-Institut and the Berlinale Talent Campus.

Synopsis of the films:

Coming of Age (Kenya)
Director: Judy Kibinge, Length: 9 min.

From de-colonization to dictatorship to a multi-party system: one woman’s account of Kenya’s route to democracy and her memories of growing up during this time. This coming-of-age story depicts the three eras and stages leading to democracy as seen through the eyes of a girl growing up. The Kenyatta era, a time of great optimism and post-independence euphoria is reflected in the innocence and naivety of the young girl. As Kenya enters its next era of dictatorship under Daniel arap Moi, the gloom and confusion of oppression is reflected by teenage turmoil. Finally, our girl is all grown up and we find ourselves in Kenya’s third stage of democracy under Mwai Kibaki, wondering if democracy has managed to develop as much as the little girl.

Don’t Shoot (South Africa)
Director: Lucilla Blankenberg, Length: 11 min.

Apartheid is a thing of the past. Thirty years after starting his career on South African television, newsreader Riaan Cruywagen is still doing his job today: He has been reading the news on television since South Africa broadcast its first evening news show in 1976. He is the longest serving Afrikaans newsreader in the world and takes great pride in his nickname, “The face of news in South Africa”. Against the backdrop of South Africa’s spectacular transformation to democracy, Riaan explains how his professional ethics have helped keep him in the news reader’s seat through all these years of upheaval.

Kinshasa 2.0 (DRC = Democratic Republic of Congo)
Director: Teboho Edkins, Length: 11 min.

Kinshasa 2.0 tells the story of how word about the arrest of Marie-Thérèse Nlandu, a woman from a prominent political family in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was spread via the Internet. Filmmaker Teboho Edkins visited Kinshasa to see how Marie-Thérèse’s arrest has affected the family. His film depicts a tense Kinshasa, where the military is omnipresent, making it extremely difficult to film. He also watches his friend Carine use Second Life, a 3D virtual chat program, as a means of communicating with her aunt Marie-Thérèse, who is in exile in Belgium after being released from custody.

The film moves between the real city and the larger-than-life virtual world of Second Life accompanied by a silent observer – a wooden soldier who appears on the edge of most scenes, observing, waiting, watching…

Famous Last Words (United Kingdom)
Director: Avril Evans, Length: 7 min.

Shortly after the terrorist attacks in London, a young Muslim woman is travelling on the underground, constantly watched by CCTV cameras. It is not long before everything starts to look suspicious, not only to her but to the on-lookers as well. The director’s comment on the film: “My motivation for writing this film is to evoke debate and get viewers to face up to the assumptions they may have about Muslims especially after the 7/7 bombings in London.

The then Secretary of State, John Reid, revealed that there were thirty terror plots under surveillance in the UK. This reinforced everyone’s insecurities and helped fuel the media’s pre-occupation with terrorism. The question – if we are living in a nanny state where we as citizens of Britain are being monitored… will this help create a peaceful environment or does everyone become a suspect?
The central theme of the film is of hope. What British people know of other cultures tends to be negative especially with the media and politicians focusing on the increasing number of asylum seekers and immigrants coming to Britain. This film therefore unravels the complex attitudes people have towards ethnic minorities and their fears of travelling on public transport since the bombings of 7/7.

Feminin – Masculin (Iran)
Director: Sadaf Foroughi, Length: 12 min.

In the male-dominated society of Iran, Farahnaz Shiri, the first female bus driver in Tehran, has created her own little society on her bus. Public buses in Iran are divided into different sections for men and women. While men go through a separate entrance at the front, women have to enter the bus through the back door, and then have to sit within a restricted zone at the back of the bus, separated from the men. But in Mrs. Shiri’s bus all this is reversed. She is the governor and sole lawmaker in her little society. In her bus, men must enter through the rear entrance and sit in a restricted zone at the back of the bus. However, Mrs. Shiri struggles to prove herself in this society and must fight against a series of injustices that accompany her status as a woman in Iranian society.

Interferenze (Italy)
Director: Zoe D’Amaro, Length: 12 min.

When media mogul Berlusconi became Prime Minister in 2002, the people of Italy feared that control over the country’s television network would fall into the hands of a small group of people. As a result, pirate TV channels started appearing throughout Italy. The right to freedom of speech is a fundamental aspect of democracy. In the countries we label democratic, is there really enough freedom to fully exercise this inviolable right? Or has this right, enshrined in our constitutions, become an unattainable, utopian ideal?

Maria and Osmey (Cuba)
Director: Diego Arrendondo, Length: 8 min.

Maria has to fight her brother and the other boys in her neighbourhood to earn her place on the baseball pitch. The game is much more exciting than the news in a special announcement on the radio that would stop all Cubans in their tracks…

Miss Democracy (Spain)
Director: Virginia Romero, Length: 9 min.

A Miss Democracy contest: the search to find the most democratic woman from the world’s most democratic countries. And who better to judge this contest than a Greek philosopher, a famous football player, a well-known gigolo and a celebrity stylist. Democracy, good looks, money and power all come into play.

My Body My Weapon (India)
Director: Kavita Joshi, Length: 9 min.

Irom Sharmila is a young woman from Manipur who has been on a fast-unto-death for nearly seven years now, demanding the repeal of emergency law. For decades the state of Manipur in north-eastern India (bordering Myanmar) has been torn apart by riots and armed separatist movements. The Indian government has attempted to control the situation using military means, granting drastic emergency powers to the security forces. The army’s Special Forces, deployed to the region, are allowed to arrest, shoot or even kill people, based on suspicion alone. But Sharmila is willing to stake everything – even her life – to restore justice and dignity to her people.

Old Peter (Russia)
Director: Ivan Golovnev, Length: 8 min.

The traditions and ways of life of the Siberian Khanty people are under threat due to the massive extraction of oil in their area. To make a stand against this, the Khanty’s last Shaman takes it upon himself to embark on the long journey to go and cast his vote. The dialogue between people, nature and gods is based upon sacred knowledge and mythology. Only a few cultures based on myth survive in the modern world. This film takes us into the word of Old Peter, the last surviving Shaman of the Kazym River. We watch how Old Peter survives on the Siberian taiga and follow him on his journey to cast his vote.

On The Square (Croatia)
Director: Vanja Juranic, Length: 4 min.

Just a normal day in Ban-jelacic Square in Zagreb. That is, until a man appears with a ladder and a placard and passers-by are forced to remember their country’s past.

Croatia is a small country and a favourite holiday destination for many people. Everyone wants to forget that Croatia was once part of Yugoslavia. But someone on the town square in Zagreb reminds them.

Three Blind Men (India)
Director: Kanu Behl, Length: 7 min.

India is the largest democracy in the world and its capital, Delhi, has a whole street set aside for permanent protests. Each day people converge on Parliament Street to make all sorts of grand demands. In the midst of the crowds on this particular day, three blind men come across an elephant and, while the crowds rush around them shouting their demands, the men try to decide what the elephant is. They each have different ideas – one thinks it’s a buffalo, another a wall, or is it a camel? The mahout has another point of view…

You Cannot Hide from Allah (Pakistan)
Director: Petr Lom, Length: 12 min.

This is the story of Mr Ihsan Khan, an immigrant from a small town in Pakistan’s Northwest Frontier Province. Mr Khan was a taxi driver in Washington DC for over 20 years, and then in 2001 he won the lottery: 54 million dollars, to be exact. Four years later, he decided to put his money to good use, returned to his hometown in Pakistan and ran for mayor. And he won. This film tells the story of our lottery-winning mayor, how he deals with the never-ending complaints of corruption and his constituents’ demands that he personally solve all their problems. What is the relation between money and politics in a democracy? That is the underlying question in this film. Some allege that Mr Khan has only used his wealth in order to gain political power. His defenders say he works for free and has donated more than a million dollars of his fortune for post-earthquake disaster relief (the town was devastated by an enormous earthquake that hit Pakistan in 2005). And he says his number one aim is to fight corruption. Who is right?

SYNOPSIS

The illustration is a form of media that is rarely appreciated for good. It was a little strange, because its presence is actually very often encountered. Illustration is arguably the first introductions to the text form of the image. In a good illustration, it’s presence became an integral part of the text itself. It’s became an anchor which binds story, makes it easier for readers to remember at the core of the story itself. “Kopling” is an image that lovers want to expand the horizons of pictures/illustrations a more “real”. Not printed on paper, but are displayed on the walls of the gallery. Spectators can take a nearly looked, observe the details. In addition to a passion for the Group’s image was a devotee of coffee, especially Indonesia’s coffee always underestimated that often. “Gypsy” groups of coffee and this image will it at Kedai Kebun. Along with Ria Paper Moon as curator, invited coffee lovers and images in Yogyakarta for the “stuck” in a frenzied they create.

SYNOPSIS

Schiller
Director: Martin Weinhart, 2004, 90 min., German with English subtitles
Cast: Matthias Schweighöfer, Teresa Weißbach, Barbara Auer, Jürgen Tarrach, Ulrich Noethen

After the sensational success of his drama „The Robbers“, young Friedrich Schiller escapes from his unhappy life as a military physician with the Duke of Württemberg and summons up the courage to launch a career as a poet with the Mannheim National Theater, where he ends up competing with his rival August Wilhelm Iffland.
An impressive biopic directed by Martin Weinhart, starring Mathias Schweighöfer in a brilliant performance as the famous poet and thinker who became later a close friend of Goethe.

Biography:

Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (1759 – 1805) was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright. He was the only son among six children of a military doctor born in Marbach, Württemberg.
In 1766, the family moved to the Duke of Württemberg’s principal residence, Ludwigsburg. There Schiller came to the attention of Karl Eugen, Duke of Württemberg. He entered an elite military academy founded by the Duke in 1773, where he eventually studied medicine.

While at this school, Schiller read Rousseau and Goethe and discussed classical ideals with his classmates. At school, he wrote his first play, The Robbers, which dramatizes the conflict between two aristocratic brothers: the elder, Karl Moor, leads a group of rebellious students into the forest where they become Robin Hood-like bandits, while Franz Moor, the younger brother, schemes to inherit his father’s considerable estate. The play’s critique of social corruption and its affirmation of proto-revolutionary republican ideals astounded its original audience. Schiller became an overnight sensation. Later, Schiller would be made an honorary member of the French Republic because of this play.

In 1780, he obtained a post as regimental doctor in Stuttgart, a job he disliked. In order to attend the first performance of The Robbers in Mannheim, Schiller left his regiment without permission. As a result, he was arrested, sentenced to 14 days of imprisonment, and forbidden by Karl Eugen from publishing any further works.

He fled Stuttgart in 1782, going via Frankfurt, Mannheim, Leipzig, and Dresden to Weimar, where he settled in 1787. In 1789, he was appointed professor of History and Philosophy in Jena, where he wrote only historical works. In 1790, Schiller married Charlotte von Lengefeld, with whom he had two sons and two daughters.

During the last seventeen years of his life (from 1788), Schiller struck up a productive, if complicated, friendship with already famous and influential Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. This relationship and discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. Goethe and Schiller founded the Weimar Theater, which became Germany’s leading theater and helped lead to a renaissance of drama in Germany.

For his achievements, Schiller was ennobled in 1802 by the Duke of Weimar, adding the nobiliary particle “von” to his name. He remained in Weimar until his death at 45 from tuberculosis in 1805.

Some important works:
Plays
Die Räuber (The Robbers), 1781
Kabale und Liebe (Intrigue and Love), 1784
Wallenstein, 1800
Maria Stuart (Mary Stuart), 1800
Die Jungfrau von Orleans (The Maid of Orleans), 1801
Wilhelm Tell (William Tell), 1804

Poems
An die Freude (Ode to Joy), (1785) – became the basis for the fourth movement of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony
Die Kraniche des Ibykus (The Cranes of Ibykus)
Die Bürgschaft (The Hostage; set to music by Schubert)
Das Lied von der Glocke (Song of the Bell)
Nänie (set to music by Brahms)

Taste the Waste
Director: Valentin Thurn, 2010, 92 min., Original version with English subtitles.

SYNOPSIS

Around half of all foodstuffs in industrial countries end up in the rubbish, mostly even before they’ve gone to the consumer. The public is only slowly becoming aware of the extent of this misuse. TASTE THE WASTE examines the reasons and looks into the consequences this has on the feeding of 7 billion people, as well as its impact on the changing climate. The documentary was filmed in Europe, Africa, Asia and the USA. If one single film could change the awareness of its viewers, Valentin Thurn’s work could very well fulfil this wish.

Employees of a French supermarket examine the sell-by date of the products. “The yoghurts will have reached their sell-by date in six days”, one explains, and so they are already considered unsellable and not even worth donating. And so this supermarket alone throws away 500 to 600 tons’ worth of food every year. A department store in Japan is no different: When new goods come in, the goods with the penultimate sell-by date are thrown away, regardless of whether they are still consumable or not. And this happens in many countries. In Austria, scientists found out the following: “Every year, 90 million tons’ worth of food is thrown away in the EU. If this were loaded onto trucks, it would form a single file around the entire equator!”

A Westphalian farmer talks about the bureaucratic constraints imposed by the regulatory authorities: on potatoes, for example, which, if they are too big or too small, do not land in the supermarket at all. One EU regulation (which has now been repealed) gained notoriety, as it regulated the curvature of cucumbers; large vendors had insisted on the regulation because of their packaging technology. Similar regulations stipulated the size of apples, carrots and tomatoes. Whatever doesn’t comply with the norms ends up in the rubbish. An American farmer reports on similar regulations, which five to ten per cent of agricultural products fall prey to – even tomatoes, which are checked for their colour by computers. In a French wholesale market, a worker from Cameroon can’t believe that beans from her country are being destroyed. They’d travelled 10.000 kilometres.

But resistance is gradually stirring. The “bin-divers” in affluent countries who go foraging through supermarket containers at night often undertake this activity for ecological rather than economic reasons. A German wholesale bakery has decided to at least use the rolls and bread loaves that weren’t sold in the evening to heat its baking ovens, rather than throwing them onto a waste tip. In Japan, food waste is used to make animal feed – a practice that is forbidden in the EU. “Reducing food waste by 50 per cent”, another insert states, “would lead to the prevention of the same amount of greenhouse gas emissions as would taking every second car in the world off the roads.” And: “North America and Europe combined chuck out enough to feed the world’s hungry three times over.”

Valentin Thurn has packed many problems into his film; but he hasn’t overloaded it, because he shows how the problems are connected on a worldwide scale; from the conflicts between small farmers and large companies in Cameroon, to the beekeepers on the rooftops of Manhattan and Brooklyn. TASTE THE WASTE refrains from using the keyword “globalisation”, and yet the film revolves around this issue. Besides presenting the many ultimately catastrophic findings of his research, he repeatedly reports on individual initiatives and organised efforts to bring change that instil courage. And so the film ultimately doesn’t end on a note of resignation, but incites resistance.
