Introduction

This exhibition is about sharing, mixing and challenging the two artists’ perceptions and interrogations on the reasons to use drawings and collages for their artworks.

Is drawing a funny transformation of daily life?…  A collage like a puppet show in wayang culture?… Can drawing be seen as an understanding of existence, society and knowledge?…
Can we see collage as a way to fight loneliness?… Can drawing be seen as a simple and reflective way to contemplate our environment?… Can drawing be associated to the primitive message in the cave?… Can drawing be considered as a fight for a desired existence?…
Can we consider drawing and collages as a way to investigate and build an understanding and essential relationship between two artists from different cultural backgrounds?

The exhibition will present personal works of the two artists and selected collaboration drawings … The event will also feature a sound and music collaboration performance.

Artists’ Profiles

Sébastien Szczyrk comes from the North Eastern part of France. After his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Mulhouse, he graduated from the Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2005.
His work is a multi-disciplinary one and goes from his visual researches (drawings, illustrations, performances…) to his sound experimentations (CD, concerts, installations…)
In his graphic work, Sébastien places a lot of importance to spontaneity and re-interpretation of daily events. His drawings have been exhibited in Paris, Kyoto and Berlin.
Sébastien Szczyrk is currently working on a project entitled ” Un Escargot Vide ?” (An empty snail?) and has for ambition to direct an animation movie mixing his visual and sound centers of interests.

Greg Sindana, a ‘guru’ candidate from Sanata Dharma, who has great fear on texts and its implications, is eager to find teaching learning communication methods on inseparable reality. He believes that arts, politics, science, philosophy, culture, spirituality and education are correlative and have an “unfragmented” dimension.
Born in Yogyakarta, Greg Sindana had already held several solo exhibitions in Yogyakarta, such as Ikonisasi Kardus: Supervisual Culture; Unpredictable Concept: Human, Spiritual, Science; and Kepauk: Extreme Realism of the Illusive.

CAPULET BAR

Capulet Bar is a place where Hendra “Blankon” Priyadhani will change into Baron Capulet Araruna. Baron Capulet Araruna is the nick name / alter ego of Blankon that used as his stage name when he on the concert with Sangkakala, an audio rock fashion show genre band. He founded it with 4 other “bandits” from the same campus but come from different district. The world of Baron Capulet Araruna is very different with Blankon’s. The images of Baron Capulet Araruna – especially when he is on stage – are rowdy, wild, tough, don juan, and all (district) rock star characters. Those images are striven emerged as maximum as possible in the form of fashion, make up, shoes, and all attributes for supporting his attitude.

Baron was taken from a name which popular in the night world, leather jacket in the style of motorcycle taxi drivers who ride RX king (motorcycle type from the brand Yamaha). Capulet was taken from the family name of purebred nobility of Juliet family (Romeo & Juliet by W. Shakespeare), and Araruna was taken from the last name one of the characters in TV serial Little Missy, named Baron Araruna. Baron Araruna in this Latin America film, which had popular in Indonesia in the 90’s, was described as a tyranny to his slaves.

Baron Capulet Araruna was not straight off made when created by Blankon, but he was the creation of all influences combination which Blankon received since he was a boy, by seeing his idols, such as their shoes, costumes, styles, and their vocal characters. All those influences were transferred and filtered into Baron Capulet Araruna.

In this project, Hendra “Blankon” Priyadhani and Baron Capulet Araruna work together to build Capulet Bar, for showing their attractions into visual art format. It is a space of collaboration for those two names.

Blankon was born in Ponorogo, East Java in 1981. He just finished his study at Graphic Art, Institute of Art Indonesia in Yogyakarta on February 2010.

Artificially Natural

In these photo series I try to review on the concept of natural vs. artificial, the original and imitation; something which is considered as “reality”. They are cliché, stereotype, and at the same time (sometime) kitsch images about the nature and all its beauty. Mural of the scenery at sunset, the picture of a couple of birds fly on the mountain, etc.

Considered I am a thief, by cropping certain parts, and then try to represent varieties of images or natural images that I found. By intersecting those images with the reality surround, maybe we able to question again about the idea, the concept, or the most fundamental boundaries on what we call “something real”.

My choice on object/angel, I do not feel have (quite) specific tendency. Mostly, I “only response” to those things surround me. Whether, it is spontaneous response (point and shoot), or something which is started accidentally, even something that I had planned before.  I considered photography as the product of observation/research, and also as the tool/media to respond the environmental or situations surround me. In this context, I see it (photography or other art mediums) “as the goal” for describing something objective; but as an “artistic fiction”, it becomes play ground, or another way to know/see the world in better way (at least that is what I hope for).

Conceptually (more or less the last three years), I no longer feel any significant point of view/perspective changes. My working methods or the ways I execute my thoughts are the same. I take picture and/or search “something which is already existed”; I am not creating, but composing, and then take pictures of it. Sometimes I see those things as the differences between a “photographer” and an “artist” (photo based artist). But then, I also often throw away that thought immediately, because it is something insignificant to be thinking off. What you make, the idea, the concept, and the subject matter are the most important things that we should consider about. On the other side, I always try to calculate some technical things. For example, lighting and compositions are important for me.  Although the technique is only purely technical, but we must be able and/or adjust it with the concept. But still, it is something that (as much as possible) should not be overlooked.

This April 2010, Kedai Kebun Forum (KKF)’s gallery is managed by artist, Kokok P. Sancoko, as his spatial experiment media. “I want to put some things, either the old things or new things that I just bought. KKF gallery is quite small, only 6 x 9 square meters.  This small space makes me a little bit different in treating it, compared to when I was offered to exhibit elsewhere.  The difference, which is the most prominent when I think about this place, is like I was “forced” to make “only” one thing. Thinking simple is hard actually.”

KKF is interested in Purwandhi Sancoko, thus the name listed on his identity card, because this artist is nearly always leaves an empty space on each of his paintings and makes signals of “growing” on his 3 dimensions works. And then, KKF offers Kokok to do the experiment which combines both of them.

“I will explore grids,” he said, besides putting things. “For me, the presence of flatness is a kind of solution of chaotic.” Kokok P. Sancoko (b. 1974) usually manages canvas into to paint or manages things into to sculpt, but this time he manages an empty space. “I don’t care, whether I am making installation or drawing, those predicates are not my business. The point is that the book about Bauhaus, which I found several time ago, helps me a lot to solve the deadlock in managing this small space”.

The white wall of Kedai Kebun Forum’s gallery, at Tirtodipuran Street 3, Yogyakarta is full with lines by pencil, which formed tiny squares. Then human-shaped shadows seem “bending” between the floor and the wall. Moreover, there is a shadow of one set of table and chair. All shadows are in white with pencil lines forming squares.

Meanwhile, at some points on the gallery’s floor, are put wooden traps with certain distance and height. On this wooden stairs, the audience able to see the works of Kokok P. Sancoko, 36 years old, in the exhibition entitled “Myth”, 7 – 30 April 2010.
Also on that stairs, the audiences can get the “miracle”, because the shadows of human and object, which at the beginning are two-dimensional, suddenly change into three-dimensional. “This is what we called optical art,” said Kokok, when met at the gallery yesterday.

The artist, who had college at Institute of Art Indonesia, Yogyakarta, 1992, asked Agung Kurniawan, Neni, and Imelda as the models. They are the owners and the administrator of Kedai Kebun Forum. Agung is in squatting position; Neni is standing and smoking, while Imelda is in a stepped position.

According to Agung, the material of this exhibition is a newness of Kokok’s works. All this time, Kokok explores grids for his two-dimension works. “This time, I challenged Kokok to do new approach, from two-dimensional works becomes three-dimensional, although keep using grids which is familiar to him,” he said.

Agung thinks that the final result of Kokok’s works can be said as site specific installation, in the form of three-dimensional apparent effect from two-dimensional material. That effect can be seen from certain distance and height; or the effect shown through camera shooting.

The grids on gallery’s wall or on the shadow of person and object have two functions. They are illusive and mathematical (logical). According to Kokok, the grids on the wall give illusion of space as the background. “It means that this works actually able to be put everywhere, not only in a room/space,” he said.

This exhibition also exhibits the works of Dedi D. Hermawan, 32 years old, in the form of human or object shadow. Dedi carries three-dimensional works; they are three pieces of woods which look like books. The first book contains a drawing of a woman who is sitting. The second book contains a mask of human face. And the third book contains drawing of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Superhand. Those three “books” are put on white wooden boxes full with grids. These artworks are also responding the space. ME, RADEN SALEH, and HAJI PRINCEN
My works’ Background for “Beyond the Dutch” Exhibition at Centraal Museum Utrecht, 15 October 2009 – 3 January 2010

I make the series of the intellectuals’ betrayal since 2003. The series were started by the making of the manuscript, The Dictionary of Sexual and Politics (2003, collection of Nadi Gallery, Jakarta), Coloring book (2003, private collection), Museum Soekrodimedjo (2006, collaboration work), and then Raden Saleh atau Buruk Muka Cermin Dibelah (2008, collection of Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta).

Raden Saleh was considered as a hero and the pioneer of Indonesian modern art, he was a complex figure. He was confused, because he had to choose whether lived in Java, where he was born, or lived in Europe, where he grown up from one castle to another. As a Javanese who lived during the phase of Javanese war (1825-1830), political choice to be Javanese or not, it should be clear, at least easy to choose. But not for Raden Saleh Bustaman, he chose the Netherlands’ Queen as his haven, because he got social and economical secures there. I also see that kind of situation is happened at the present. During the era of Suharto or at any era, intellectual was gathered at the center of the power.

My works on Raden Saleh, was set on purpose at the rest room of Sanata Dharma University’s head office, it is one of the Catholic universities in Yogyakarta. It was strange, but it was real that Catholic intellectuals had great power in the machine formation of the New Order supremacy. It can be said that they were the “think thank”, the brain. By placing the picture of the intellectual who betrayed his people inside the room that always visited by the lecturers and academics; they looked at the mirror and saw their faces. Between those faces, there were texts from the pioneer of Indonesian modern visual art who became a “traitor”.

Artists are intellectuals; they are the biggest traitors, including me.

Haji Princen was a native Dutch person, who was born at the wrong place. He was raised in an eccentric family in Netherlands and then forced to sail to a tropical country which always became the shadow of Modern Netherlands. He came as a soldier for “hunting the terrorists” in Indonesia. Then, he fell in love with Indonesia through the women, and through its arts communities. Finally he chose to become Indonesian, although there were condemnations from his Dutch friends.

Was Poncke the traitor or Poncke the savior of the Dutch’s common sense?

My works tried to revisit Raden Saleh to his beloved country, the Netherlands. Meanwhile, I bartered him with Haji Princen. The rest room at Centraal Museum, Utrecht could be the right place to display those works, because it was the monument for the forgotten people. So, here was the place where they should be crowned as heroes; at the rest room where we dump our trashes and forgotten heroes.
