INTRODUCTION

This May, Kedai Kebun Forum (KKF) invites Bandung Artist, Mufti Priyanka, who works a lot on drawing. At this moment, Amenk packs his exhibition just like the way he presents his drawing works, in the format of rough sketches, full drawings, and free doodling, which represent him as a whole personality at this time.

‘Neurotik djiwo lohjinawi’ is the representation of the way I draw. It is also the way I state my mind freely, and as the mediation to my personal imaginary intuition in describing the personal/public matters which might be happened surround us, even in an ambiguous/absurd ways”, Amenk said (that is how he usually called), explaining the title of his exhibition.

Drawing studies usually been done as part of artistic achievement of an artist. This process might be happened for the rest of artist’s carrier period or might be part of an artwork creation process. However, not all of those creation journeys considered important, even by the artist himself. This young man admitted that he is inspired by some drawings of Raymond Pettibon, Eko Nugroho, Jan Mintaraga comics, and Bambang Wicaksono.

SYNOPSIS

The Educators (Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei)
Director: Hans Weingartner, 126 min., 2003/2004
Cast: Daniel Brühl, Julia Jentsch, Stipe Erceg, Burghard Klaußner

Jan and Peter share a flat in Berlin, a Volkswagen bus, and ideas on how to act against social injustice in the world: They break in luxury mansions when the owners aren’t home – not to steal anything, but to re-arrange the furniture and leave notes, such as “You have too much money” or “Your days of plenty are numbered”, and sign themselves as “The Edukators”. Peter’s girlfriend Jule has just lost her flat because she fell behind with the rent, and moves in with Peter and Jan. She has a casual job in an expensive restaurant to pay off enormous debts - in a road accident she wrecked the car of a rich businessman (Hardenberg), and now she has to pay for the damage.

While Peter is on a short trip abroad, Jan and Jule become closer. Jan tells her about their campaign against the super rich and lets her talk him into going to Hardenberg’s mansion. At the end of their ‘mission’ they throw a designer sofa into the pool and hastily scarper when the alarm goes off. Jule, however, has left her mobile phone behind. Jan and Jule go back inside and are caught by Hardenberg. Jan knocks him down, and calls Peter for help, as the situation threatens to get completely out of hand. The trio kidnap the businessman and take him to a mountain hut in the Tyrol. There, the kidnappers and their victim have long discussions: Hardenberg reveals that he was a student activist in 1968, a committee-member of the Socialist Student Union, and a friend of Rudi Dutschke (the Union’s most prominent spokesperson). He tells them he disapproves of the kidnap, but respects their idealism. From this point on, a mutual understanding seems to be developing. In the meantime, Hardenberg maliciously hints of Jan and Jule’s relationship to the unsuspecting Peter. The subsequent rift does not last long – and they know it is time to end the kidnap. They take Hardenberg back to his mansion. However, his conciliatory words are not to be trusted.

THE EDUKATORS was not only a success in Germany, but was also the first German film in eleven years to be included in the Cannes film competition. The film was shot exclusively with two handheld digital cameras, which followed the actors and only took positions that a human observer would have. Weingartner tells the story from an eyewitness’s point of view and in this way creates a subconscious complicity between the viewer and the film’s heroes. From the very beginning one senses the personal closeness of the director to the characters and their story. “THE EDUKATORS has a lot to do with the last ten years of my life, in which I repeatedly tried to become politically active, and repeatedly failed. I became a punk when punk was already over. I became a squatter when that was coming to an end. I think we live in a time when lots of young people want to see political change but don’t know how to bring it about”, Hans Weingartner explains. THE EDUKATORS is one of the most convincing works so far about a young German generation, which is all too often dismissed as superficial.

Introduction

Meresap di Kedai Kebun | Seep at Kedai Kebun
Stop Motion Project; “Fin”

Ignatius Ade and Fida Irawanto were united by one thing, their interest on little and detail things. “Detail is the devil”, and to them, this devil is interesting. The Project “Meresap di Kedai Kebun” | Seep in Kedai Kebun, started with the residency, where KKF provided space for those two artists, working at the gallery, and then moved to office room which was changed into impromptu animation studio. KKF also facilitated the meeting with a young writer, who worked on the script. Actually, this kind of work collaboration was not the first time for KKF, because KKF had done the same things for the previous projects.

They worked hard for many days; making figures, arranging the frame for the clay, making the background setting, and ended by shooting pictures for millions times inside a black cloth covered room to get the sense of density. In that room, they brought to live the tiny things that they had made before. Stop motion is an exhausted way in making animation (even actually, there is no easy way in making animation). However, this method suits them. Fida is a reliable sculptor, and since the very beginning, he is interested in tiny things. While Ade, he is a flop semi-electronic musician, who obsessed with anxious music. And those are coupled with a script made by young blogger, Tika Savitri.

These three people formed a bizarre collaboration; two weird guys and a young woman who still confuse in forming her own identity.

Gang Bang Yoi is “an animation company”, which runs by Ign. Loyola Aryo, and those two weird guys. It was built in the “self-taught” spirit. They never learn on how get to know this media formally. They are using lots of used materials. It is impossible to buy new materials; first, because those are not sold in the store, and second the price are too expensive. Animations using these used materials do not make their works mediocre. The “lacking” is not shown; it only shows the optimism of used materials. It is a typical work method of the fringes, the people who commonly see a half-full glass, anxious-optimistic-people.

Seep at Kedai Kebun is their first project which is exhibited. Previously, they made animation works in the terms of competition or job order. In the context of exhibition, animation should be attempted using different approach. It is not only played in a television box, but also needed to be make-up. Animation is just small parts of presentation at the gallery; the other thing that matters is also the correlation between the animations and the space itself. In the next exhibition, it also will be showed their working process. The animation sets, notes, and sketches. This exhibition will show a month collaboration efforts. So the gallery will not only show the works, but also its crumbs.

The goal of the exhibition this time is to show the variety of media, which seems slowly gone from the visual arts’ mapping in Yogyakarta. We are trapped in the casket of paintings on canvas. Slowly, the visual arts of Yogyakarta are paraded into a shallow grave, which smelled the odour of the carcass. The role of non-mainstream gallery, such as Kedai Kebun Forum, is on its alternative ideas. KKF never has commercial tendency, so KKF is easy-going in accommodating such process-oriented and experimental works.

Hence forward, we hope that we could give a little contribution for the arts discourse in Yogyakarta. Hopefully, Gang Bang Yoi is not gang-banged yet from the arts market. It’s a pity; they are still young and inexperienced.

Tika Savitri, a young girl who was born in Surakarta 1992, is still studying at Cultural Anthropology, Gajah Mada University, Yogyakarta. She falls in love in writing, and she poured into her blog, www.sirkuskelilingku.blogspot.com. She was finally chosen to be the writer in this project through audition. Ign. Ade and Fida Irawanto, both are graduated from Fine Art Department, Indonesia Institute of Arts, Yogyakarta in 2010 and 2008. Further information about their other projects, check it out at www.gangbangyoi.blogspot.com.

This exhibition, as the result of residency, will last from 9 until 28 April 2012. Kedai Kebun Forum open everyday, from 11:00 am – 11:00 pm, except on Tuesday, we close.

KRABAT

Director: Marco Kreuzpaintner, 120 min, 2006-08, German with English subtitles
Cast: David Kross, Daniel Brühl, Christian Redl, Anna Thalbach

14-year-old orphan Krabat is taken on as an apprentice by the sinister master of a mill. Alongside eleven other lads, he finds himself learning not just the miller’s craft but eventually also the arts of black magic. However, this comes at a high price: every New Year’s Eve one of the students must forfeit his life since this is the only way their master, who has made a pact with Death, can extend his own life for another year. Krabat, however, begins to break away from this fateful power struggle. His inner strength, a shrewd friend and the love of a girl help him banish the dark shadows that have long been cast over this place and its inhabitants.

In this respect Otfried Preussler’s 1971 children’s book KRABAT contains something both timeless and universal. It tells of the seduction of power, the strength of love, the illusion of security and the challenges of freedom. Based on a Sorbian legend, the story takes place in Upper Lausatia in eastern Germany at the beginning of the 18th century when Augustus the Strong ruled Saxony, a situation indicated by certain minor events. Screenwriter Michael Gutmann and director Marco Kreuzpaintner have set their film adaptation some years earlier in a period more familiar to the audience: the altogether more impoverished and shabby era of the Thirty Years War, which finished in 1648.

Krabat has lost his parents in the upheaval of the war. The guttural voice of the narrator, Otto Sander, sets the scene. One night Krabat falls into a kind of dream state and is lured to a mysterious mill where the ominous miller takes him on. Krabat slaves away alongside eleven other lads, content at least to have found a roof over his head. Soon, however, he is initiated into a secret: the mill is revealed to be a school of magic where the master teaches his apprentices the black arts. At first Krabat is fascinated and, like the others, he learns to transform himself into a raven and fly. The boys succeed in protecting the inhabitants of a nearby village from marauding soldiers thanks to their supernatural powers. But when Tonda, who has cared for him like an older brother, loses his life, Krabat gradually begins to fully realize the dangerous and dichotomous nature of this circle. He finds a shrewd friend in Juro, the kitchen hand who pretends to be dim-witted. Juro tells him that the love of a girl is required to vanquish the master. Krabat, who has long been in love with local girl Kantorka, decides to take up the fight, even though winning will mean the loss of his newly acquired magic powers.

The message of this successful novel-to-film adaptation has a lasting resonance: those who possess great strength are also able to inspire an astonishing solidarity in others.

Introduction

“KW2” Project is one of the ways to see how a visual art is interpreted within economic

framework. All this time, visual art is codified extensively, so that slowly but sure, it loses its

non-economical function. Visual art privatization makes painting can only be enjoyed by few

people. KW2 tries to “tempt” visual art privatization by making copies of Indonesian most

expensive artworks. It is meant for public also able to enjoy the skills and achievements of

Indonesian art workers (artists) by cheaper price and reasonable size for common Indonesian

houses. (-agung kurniawan-)

Introduction

It starts from the feeling of not satisfied with the existing toys, Fahla F. Lotan (a.k.a. Dila) and R. Bonar Diat S. P. (a.k.a. Otong) customized some toys (any kind of toys) into, which according to them, new and more characterized toys.

At Otong’s room, which is extra narrow room, he showed me some little baskets, storage containers of Otong’s creativity of vandalism to “normal” toys, which already separated. One container consists of body pieces; one container consists of machine components; one container consists of airplanes’ wings. All are come from small toys around 10 cm length. “I will use them one day, and do not know what they’ll become,” Otong said. Then he showed me “Dasa Muka (Dasa Muka is Javanese, means ten faces)”, one of his creations. It has several heads (I forgot to count it, is it really 10 or not), there are wayang’s head (wayang: Javanese puppet), alligator’s head, clown’s, dinosaur’s, chicken’s, super hero’s, etc. Most of new creatures, Otong’s creations, have tails and all are arranged and compiled from different toys’ parts.

“Mine mostly are collages,” Dila said. Dila’s toys mostly still able to be mentioned as “human look a like” and still cute. Dila “ruin” the beauty of Barbie dolls. She made some new costumes, and some new legs made of woods for her Barbie dolls.

“Your energy is quite good to make those small creatures, but for those big ones, it seems that less dashing,” my comment for bigger creatures… We’ll see together later on Kedai Kebun Forum Gallery, on 11 until 26 September 2011, ThedeoMIXBLOOD, that is how the call themselves, will exhibit some odd creatures of their creations. Now, Dila still study at ISI (Indonesian Institute of Arts) Yogyakarta, Photography program. While Otong studies at ISI Solo. We welcome you to the Opening, on Sunday, 11 September 2011, at KKF, at 07:00 pm. This exhibition is open for public and FREE. (Yustina Neni)

SINOPSIS

Director : Doris Dörrie,
Duration : 127 min,
Year : 2007/08,
Language : German with English subtitles
Cast : Elmar Wepper, Hannelore Elsner

Rudi is unaware that he is suffering from cancer and only has a few weeks left to live. The doctor has only informed his vivacious, esoteric wife Trudi of his diagnosis, and she decides that they should take a last holiday together. She persuades her husband to leave their peaceful but uneventful life in Allgäu, Bavaria, and to go with her to Berlin to visit their children and grandchildren. When they arrive, however, they realize the young family is too caught up in its own existence to be concerned with reforging an intimate bond with them. After attending a Japanese Butoh dance performance, the couple decide it would be best to book into a hotel on the Baltic sea. After arriving there, Trudi dies unexpectedly. Rudi loses his bearings and has no idea how to carry on.

How – everyone wonders – is the eccentric and far from independent Rudi, of all people, supposed to get by on his own? Which of the children should look after him in distant Bavaria? The widower himself also struggles to come to terms with his new situation – and is still unaware that he has very little time left to live. He is also plagued by guilt as he discovers how much of her own life Trudi sacrificed for him, how much she gave up. Not least her passion for Japanese Butoh dance, which she never pursued, for Rudi’s sake above all else. Rudi eventually leaves for Japan to visit his son Karl. And there, of all places, surrounded by the foreigness he had always despised, he is able to rediscover an intimacy with his late wife by fulfilling her lifelong dream of visiting Japan and seeing Mount Fuji.

A poetic journey into the heart of the human soul. The story of a selfless love. Captivating and melancholy. A deeply human and poignant love story about a couple in their mid-sixties, who only truly discover one another once death has parted them.

Review by „Der Spiegel“:
“CHERRY BLOSSOMS – HANAMI is a deeply sad, yet truly uplifting film about death. […] In her most powerful film yet, Doris Dörrie tells a delicate, laconic, moving tale of loss, grieving and joie de vivre in the face of death.“

Indonesia has seen an explosion of video practices and organizations since the arrival of affordable platforms for production and distribution.

To date, much vital work has been done – in ground-up networks devoted to art and digital culture, social activism and participatory media – to survey this diverse activity, its growing purchase on the public sphere, and the challenges faced. But as DV is absorbed into the mainstream media-scape, what are the crucial technical, social and aesthetic strategies for a politics of video going forward? Which are the exemplary videos, video-makers, and organizations, and why? And what histories have shaped the medium, that have yet to be written into the discussion?

This event gathers key thinkers from video’s diverse constituencies in Indonesia, and innovative practitioners from abroad, for exchange and focused discussion that will take the discourse on video in Indonesia beyond overviews.
